Part Two

Order of Battle

—Chapter Twenty-Seven—

Monday, August 12th

Back at her father’s place, Jacqueline Sinclair, deciding to cover the window through which her father had been shot, grabbed a small sheet of plywood, nails, and a hammer from the garage, and boarded it up the best she could. “At least the wind won’t be blowing through it anymore,” she muttered.

Once done, she grew restless and started pacing. Finding where her father kept his best stock of liquor, she found a half-empty bottle of Harper’s Kentucky bourbon, poured herself a tall glass, and gulped it down. She refilled her glass then huddled in a corner of her father’s couch.

It should keep her asleep, she thought.

With the window boarded up, it was quiet once again. Sitting in the den’s darkness and placing the empty glass on the side-table, her thoughts turned toward her father; cheerful thoughts of her past together with her mother, traveling all over the world, leaving her old friends behind for new ones along the way. It was a military way of life she’d grown to love.

Sinclair’s shoulders slumped. “I love you, Mom, Dad.” Sinclair felt tears welling up and slowly closed her eyes.

Having finished her bourbon, she rose and walked toward the room she knew her father kept ready if and when she would return.

Stripping naked, she looked in the mirror and didn’t like what she saw. Her face looked as if a Mack truck had run her over. The swelling above her left eye had gone down considerably, but the cuts about her face looked about healed. A slight reddish scar on the right side of the forehead would need more time to heal. Maybe the shower will do her some good.

Sinclair pondered one thing or another about her time with Tom Price as she showered. Once finished, she toweled herself down, wrapped another towel around her hair, and donned a nightgown. Once her hair had dried, she entered the bedroom and lay down to sleep.

Tossing and turning, she found sleep elusive, her mind shifting to one person, Tom Price. Why him? she thought. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but she was feeling a stronger bond she hadn’t felt in a long time. Not even with Captain Cory.

Sleep overtook her and her dream was of Price.

In her dream, they were standing close to each other, and he wore only his shorts, and she a white nightgown, opened in the front. She saw herself sliding out of her gown, now naked and moving closer to him as her breasts touched his hard, chiseled chest and, whispering in his ear, “I need you inside me!”

He still wore his underwear, and as her hand slid down inside, she felt him very firm. Her breathing became labored; seeing herself as he picked her up and carried to the bedroom, she moaned, sighing, “Oh, so strong.” And, as he gently set her on her bed, she removed his underwear.
